Saints Cosmas and Damian: Feast Day Sept. 26th

I don't know about you, but my favorite season of the year is fall. There's just something about the cool brisk air that makes me feel alive, and the crunch and smell of vibrant colored leaves beneath my feet that makes it impossible for me to not smile. So, when two saint brothers, who were physicians, have a feast day that falls in fall (pardon the pun) you go with the theme: "An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away"— I know it's probably stretching it. 

Family Breakfast:

To start our morning off, we made apple cider biscuits served with honey and scrambled eggs, and enjoyed warm cups of apple cider to drink.    

Activities:

Since Saints Cosmas and Damian were physicians, today's activities included coloring a human heart coloring page and discussing two parts of the heart—veins and arteries. I then cut up an apple and using ink  and washable paint, had my kids use the apple slices as homemade stamps to make heart images. Discussing and coloring/making hearts, allowed me to talk to my children not only about how the two saints we were celebrating today helped heal people, but also how Jesus is the "Divine Physician" who heals us all body, mind and soul.

Baptism of the Lord: The Last Day of Christmas  “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. The Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle: Feast Day Feb. 22 “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18) Today, we celebrate the feast day of Peter's appointment by Christ to govern the Church on earth, and his successors in that role to become the next Vicar of Christ—in simple terms, today's feast day celebrates the institution of the papacy.
