Saints Cosmas and Damian: Feast Day Sept. 26th

I don't know about you, but my favorite season of the year is fall. There's just something about the cool brisk air that makes me feel alive, and the crunch and smell of vibrant colored leaves beneath my feet that makes it impossible for me to not smile. So, when two saint brothers, who were physicians, have a feast day that falls in fall (pardon the pun) you go with the theme: "An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away"— I know it's probably stretching it. 

Family Breakfast:

To start our morning off, we made apple cider biscuits served with honey and scrambled eggs, and enjoyed warm cups of apple cider to drink.    

Activities:

Since Saints Cosmas and Damian were physicians, today's activities included coloring a human heart coloring page and discussing two parts of the heart—veins and arteries. I then cut up an apple and using ink  and washable paint, had my kids use the apple slices as homemade stamps to make heart images. Discussing and coloring/making hearts, allowed me to talk to my children not only about how the two saints we were celebrating today helped heal people, but also how Jesus is the "Divine Physician" who heals us all body, mind and soul.

Saints Joachim and Anne

Saints Joachim and Anne: Feast Day July 26th Have you ever thought about the fact that Jesus had grandparents? When God the Son took on human flesh, he also paced himself within the dynamics of the human family. Although there is no specific reference in the Bible to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s parents by name, the Church celebrates Jesus' maternal grandparents under the names Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. It took a special father and mother to raise, care for, and help prepare the Blessed Virgin Mary for her future vocation and extraordinary relationship with God the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and her saintly husband, Saint Joseph; and those special parents were no doubt saints themselves.
