Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe:

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe! What a beautiful reminder that Jesus is not just the Christ, Messiah, Prince of Peace and King of Kings, but the King of the entire Universe! One of my favorite songs, “My Redeemer Lives,” by Nicole C. Mullen, has the opening lyric, “Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning?” The song then continues to acknowledge God’s wonder and power over creation—the ocean, the moon, the stars and all of creation. If you haven’t heard this beautiful song, I’ve included a YouTube link below. I hope you and your family enjoy it and really listen to the lyrics and see within them the beauty of Jesus as the King of the Universe.

Today’s feast day is also the last Sunday of the liturgical year. When Advent starts next week, it will mark the beginning of a new church year/calendar. So as you and your family celebrate the final feast day of the year, celebrate it in royal fashion reflecting upon the triune splendor and majesty of our God!

Celebrating Through Food:

Instead of my family’s traditional brunch, today we had a celebratory luncheon. My mom and dad had us over to their house, and they made baked “King Hawaiian dinner roll” sandwiches stuffed with ham and cheese using this delicious recipe from “Allrecipes.” You can also fill these sandwiches with your favorite deli meats, cheeses, veggies, or tuna fish. They then served the sandwiches with this Italian Wedding Soup recipe, from the Food Network, and we called it "Royal Italian Wedding Soup."  If you want to keep it simple, you can also buy cans of Italian Wedding Soup. My family chose to make a "Royal Italian Wedding Soup," not only because it’s name is symbolic of Jesus being King of the Universe, but also because its name connects to the mystery of the Mass being the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. How cool is that!?!

If you’re looking for a sweet treat to make today instead of something savory, check out “Catholic Cuisine.” There are various desserts/sweet recipes for today’s celebration listed at this website, or there is this yummy looking German Crown cake recipe, from “The Spruce Eats,” that sounds delicious to make.

Celebrating Through a Science Craft:

Today, to help your children visualize the connection of Jesus being King of the Universe, make a planet mobile with stars. NASA has free printables of the planets, and here is a free printable of the sun, moon, and stars from “Super Coloring.”

Celebrating with Games:

You and your family can also play this fun Jesus Christ, King of the Universe memory matching game I created or the fun Bingo version. Here are links to my free printables. Just print, laminate and play.

Prayer:

Here is a prayer I wrote that you and your family can say together.

Dear Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, I cannot even begin to fathom the majesty of your awesomeness. Please help me grow in awe and wonder of your might, and fill my heart with love and adoration for you my Lord and God. If it be Your will, grant me the grace of unshakable faith and keep my sight on you all the days of my life. Amen.

May you and your family have a blessed Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe!

Saint Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa of Avila: Feast Day October 15th (My rendition of François Gérard’s painting “Teresa of Ávila”  1827) "Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing make you afraid. All things are passing. God alone never changes. Patience gains all things. If you have God, you will want for nothing. God alone suffices.”  It's been a while since I've written a blog post, and as I reflect upon the words of Saint Teresa of Avila's "Serenity Prayer" above, I cannot help but find comfort in them. Living in a time when everything in the world seems to be turned upside down, and logic and truth abandoned, the wisdom of Saint Teresa offers hope, consolation, and peace.  Teresa of Avila lived in a time similar to our own. Born in the 16th century, she witnessed a world that contained globalism, political conflicts, and religious tensions following the Protestant Reformation. Yet during this turmoil, she trusted in God. She lived a life of contemplation, excelled in writing and p...

Saint Margaret Mary

Saint Margaret Mary: Feast Day October 16th  “Look upon yourself as a tree planted beside water, which bears its fruit in due season; the more it is shaken by the wind, the deeper it strikes its roots into the ground.” ~ Saint Margaret Mary ~ Faith is a gift—an undeserved and valuable grace granted by the Holy Spirit. Each of us has the capacity to seek The Way, The Truth, and The Life, for this longing has been inscribed within our hearts. Yet, in our free will, we have the choice and ability to ignore and turn from this divine call. Like the image of the tree Saint Margaret Mary describes above, if we seek Jesus and are rooted in our faith, nothing can shake us. Our water is the Church, and Jesus, in the Holy Eucharist, is who makes our roots deep and strong enabling us to withstand the winds of the world and produce good fruit in His name.  Jesus offers us so many opportunities to find Him, and so many ways to live with Him in Heaven. In the 1600s, He appeared to Saint Mar...

Baptism of the Lord

Baptism of the Lord: The Last Day of Christmas  “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11) Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. Since Jesus is God and, therefore, sinless and perfect, he didn’t need to be baptized, but by being baptized, he gave us a sacrament for adoption into his family—a means to become children of God. What makes the Sacrament of Baptism important? (1) Baptism claims us as children of God, forgiving us of our sins, (“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”), it is the first sacrament of initiation into the Church and Her mission, and through Baptism, God gifts us with grace. What exactly is grace? The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines it as: “Grace is favor, the free undeserved help that God gives us to respond to His call to become children of ...
